O Dea, che tra le selve, a chi ti chiama,
Rispondi in voce colma di desio,
Deh, dimmi, com’ humiliar poss’io
L’altera ninfa, che mia morte brama.
Ama!
Amo misero, et am’un vivo scoglio,
Ch’a l’onda del mio pianto più s’indura.
Dura!
Come durar potrò, lasso, se tanto
Ha in odio me, quanto forse ama altrui.
Hui!
Che voce e questa, oimè, mi biasm’o spreggi,
O pur duol ti, che’l ver forse celebro?
Ebro.
Ebro a torto mi chiami, e’l ver mi vaglia:
Non fu sempre ver me crudel’ e fera?
Era.
E s’era, hor quand’ha mai deposto il gelo
Di crudeltà, ch’in lei si nutre ancora?
Hora.
Dunque i chieggio perdono, e prego lei,
Ch’a darm’aita in tanto duol non tarde.

O Göttin, die in den Wäldern dem, der dich anruft,
mit einer Stimme voller Verlangen antwortest,
ach, sag mir, wie ich besänftigen kann
die hochmütige Nymphe, die meinen Tod ersehnt
Liebe!
Ich liebe elendig, und ich liebe einen lebendigen Felsbrocken,
der sich durch die Flut meiner Tränen noch verhärtet.
Halte durch!
Wie werde ich durchhalten können, ach, wenn sie
mich so sehr verabscheut, vielleicht so sehr, wie sie einen anderen liebt.
Oh weh!
Welch eine Antwort ist das, ach, tadelst oder verachtest du mich,
oder schmerzt es dich, dass ich vielleicht die Wahrheit ausspreche?
Trunkener!
Betrunken nennst du mich zu Unrecht, und die Wahrheit bestätigt mich:
War sie nicht mir gegenüber immer unbarmherzig und grausam?
Sie war.
Und wenn sie es war, wann wird sie nun jemals das Eis
der Unbarmherzigkeit ablegen, das sich immer noch in ihr nährt?

O Goddess, you that in the woods answer whoever calls you
in a voice full of longing,
oh tell me, how I can soothe
the haughty nymph that desires my death.
Love!
I love miserably, and I love living rock,
that becomes even harder by the flood of my tears.
Hold out!!
How will I be able to hold out, if she as much
hates me, as she perhaps loves another.
Oh woe!
What do you say, alas, do you reproach or disdain me,
or does it hurt you that I might tell the truth?
Drunkard!
A drunkard you wrongly call me, and the truth shall confirm my saying:
Wasn’t she always to me merciless and cruel?
She was.
And if she was, when will she ever leave off that ice
of mercilessness, that she still feeds inside her?
Now.
Then I will ask for pardon, and beg her,
that she will not tarry to help me in such grief.
Be so bold!
O happy passion, o fortunate lovers,
we will live cheerfully on earth, as it pleases heaven:
