Oscura notte parmi ovunque miro,
signor da che son privo
di veder il tuo viso,
ch’a me è vita, spirto e paradiso.
Lasso ch’in van m’adiro,
Poi che morte vuol pur che resti vivo
a mal mio grado, acciò vivend’io mora
Ben mille e mille volte l’hora.

German translation

Schwarze Nacht scheint mir,wohin ich schaue,
Herr, von dem mir verwehrt ist,
dein Gesicht zu sehen,
das für mich Leben ist, Seele und Paradies.
Ach, umsonst erzürne ich mich,
denn der Tod will, dass ich leben bleibe
gegen meinen Willen, damit ich lebend sterbe
wohl abertausend Mal jede Stunde.

English translation

Black night it seems to me, wherever I look,
Sir, of whom I am deprived
to behold your face,
which for me is life, soul and paradise.
Alas, in vain I enrage myself,
for death wants that I stay alive
against my will, so that I die living
