Biography
Robert A. Glenn was born in Salem, North Carolina, serving as Lieutenant in Company I of the 22nd North Carolina Infantry during the Civil War. After the War, he relocated to Illinois to become a music teacher, teaching in Flora and Mcleansboro. He later left teaching and opened Glenn’s Music Store in Murphysboro. He was an active member of the First Methodist church of Murphysboro. After ill health forced his retirement, he and his wife moved to Lawrenceville. He published a number of music collections for use in churches, singing schools, and music conventions. Some of his hymns and songs appeared in other music collections published in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. One of his most famous songs is “My Old Cottage Home” which was later recorded by the Carter Family and is popular with bluegrass artists.
