Se da vostri begli occhi il mio mal nasce
Mentre l'alma si pasce
De lor vago divin almo splendore,
Se mi s'accend'il core
Qual hor vi miro,
hor qual fia ‘l viver mio
Se di vedervi ogn’hor cresce il desio.

German translation

Wenn aus Euren schönen Augen mein Unheil erwächst,
während die Seele sich nährt
an ihrem schönen, göttlichen, erhabenen Strahlen,
wenn sich mein Herz entzündet
jedes Mal, wenn ich Euch sehe,
was wird nun aus meinem Leben,
wenn bei eurem Anblick immer das Begehren anwächst?

If from your beautiful eyes my doom arises,
while the soul nourishes
on their beautiful, divine, sublime splendour,
if my heart inflames
every time I see you,
what will my life be
if by regarding you always swells the desire?
