The sun is sinking; in the western sky
Its lingering lustre glows,
And dusky shadows on the woodlands lie,
As daylight fainter grows.
The tender flowerets close their petals fair
Till comes the morning hour,
And songters trill soft vespers, and prepare
For rest in leafy bower!

The sun is sinking; on the loftiest hills
Its glimmering rays remain;
But in the valleys all the murmuring rills
Now crave its beams in vain;
Within the heavens soon the moon will rise,
And golden stars out-peep,
The day be noted but by memories
That will not fade with sleep!

Slowly, but full surely,
The sun is sinking west;
When passed away Its last bright ray
The earth will be at rest.
