Volsi, hor non voglio, e del voler ch’io volsi
Mi doglio, e del desiar che desiai
Mi pento, e del sperar che già sperai,
E del pensier ch’in van sperand’ accolsi
L’empie catene in cui lieto m’involsi,
Fisso mirando i fraudulenti rai.
Sdegno l’ha rotte, e non fia che già mai
Più mi rileghi onde a ragion mi sciolsi.

Gratia e bellezza furon l’esca e gli hami
Che mi tiraro a l’amoroso impaccio,
Crudeltà e poca fe fa ch’io disami.
Rotta è l’aspra catena e sciolto il laccio,
In van saetti, Amor, in van mi chiami,
Che pensando al gran tort’ogn’hor più agghiaccio.

German translation

Ich begehrte, nun begehre ich nicht mehr, und über das Begehren
bin ich betrübt, und das Verlangen
bereue ich, und die Hoffnung, die ich einst hegte,
und den Gedanken, dass ich vergebens hoffend annahm
die grausamen Ketten, in denen ich mich freudig band,
unentwegt betrachtend die trügerischen Strahlen.
Der Zorn hat sie zerbrochen, und niemals mehr geschehe,
dass ich mich noch einmal binde, wo ich mich mit Grund gelöst habe.

Anmut und Schönheit waren Köder und Angel,
die mich hineinzogen in die Liebesverwirrung,
Grausamkeit und wenig Treue macht, dass ich nun verachte.
Zerbrochen ist die grausame Kette und gelöst die Fessel.
Vergebens schießt du, Amor, umsonst rufst du mich,
da ich, eingedenk des großen Unrechts, immer mehr erkalte.

English translation

I coveted, now I don’t, and my covetousness
grieves me. And the desire
I do repent, and the hope I once nourished,
and the idea, that I vainly hoping accepted
the cruel chains in wich I happily bound myself,
steadfastly regarding the treacherous rays.
Anger hasbroken them, and may it never again happen,
that I tie myself again where I have freed myself with good reason.

Grace and beauty were bait and rod
that dragged me into love’s confusion,
cruelty and scant fidelity makes me despise now.
The cruel chain is broken and the tie is unfastened.
In vain you aim, Amor, in vain you call me,
for thinking of the great misdeed I more and more do freeze.
