Softly slumber, sweetly rest,
By the summer airs caressed;
Twinkling stars, in heaven beaming,
Crescent moon, her radiance streaming,
All in Nature’s song unite,
“Welcome, welcome, peaceful night.”
Sleep, by summer airs caressed;
Softly slumber, sweetly rest.

From the groves, where shadows quiver
On the gently gliding river,
Plaintive notes of love are swelling,
Philomel her sorrows telling:
Fragrant flowerets without number,
Odours yield to soothe thy slumber;
Sleep through night and rosy dawning,
Till it brightens into morning.
