The Bible’s less flattering moments: the responses of three normal people when God told them to do big things. The essence of God’s reply to each is, ‘I will be with you’.
Jeremiah: the prophet used by God to predict the exile to Babylon, which he then sees; the end of exile, which he never sees; and, in the far future, a ‘New Covenant’.
Jeremiah 1:4-8 (Bold text indicates text used in the composition).
4 ‘The word of the LORD came to me, saying,
5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
6 "Ah, Sovereign LORD," I said, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a child." 7 But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a child.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you […]’
Gideon: The judge who is used by God to save his people from seven years of horrible oppression at the hands of the Midianites. Judges 6:12-16
12 ‘When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."
13 "But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian."
14 The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?"
15 "But Lord, “Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." 16 The LORD answered, "I will be with you […]”’
Ananias: The new believer who is told to place his hands on Saul (later St. Paul) and restore his sight, even though at that moment Saul had arrived with the purpose of capturing believers. ‘I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison.’ (Acts 22:4). Acts 9:10-14
10 ‘In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, "Ananias!" "Yes, Lord," he answered.
11 The Lord told him, "Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight."
13 "Lord," Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority […] to arrest all who call on your name."’
