English text
Echo in the forest dwells,
Haunting every leafy shade,
And her silvery music swells
Sweetly through the glade;
Answering our tones of mirth,
Like some far-off child of earth;
Hear her now with cadence sweet,
Fill the forest’s dark retreat.
Every feeling of the heart—
Pleasure’s laugh or sorrow’s moan—
By some strange and subtle art
Answers in her tone;
Every soul her music hears,
Full of gladness or of tears,
As its own deep feelings run,
Whether in the shade or sun.
Echo, echo, join us now;
Make the dark woods gaily ring;
Bursting leaf and waving bough
Tell us of the spring;
Echo happy, echo sweet,
Join with us the spring to greet;
Now we call thee, Echo, pray,
Answer all our songs today.
