and why? they are the very joy of my heart.
{{Vs|112}} I have applied my heart to fulfil thy statutes alway : even unto the end.
{{Vs|113}} I hate them that imagine evil things : but thy law do I love.
{{Vs|114}} Thou art my defence and shield : and my trust is in thy word.
{{Vs|115}} Away from me, ye wicked : I will keep the commandments of my God.
{{Vs|116}} O stablish me according to thy word, that I may live : and let me not be disappointed of my hope.
{{Vs|117}} Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe : yea, my delight shall be ever in thy statutes.
{{Vs|118}} Thou hast trodden down all them that depart from thy statutes : for they imagine but deceit.
{{Vs|119}} Thou puttest away all the ungodly of the earth like dross : therefore I love thy testimonies.
{{Vs|120}} My flesh trembleth for fear of thee : and I am afraid of thy judgements.

{{Vs|32}} Ik zal den weg Uwer geboden lopen, als Gij mijn hart verwijd zult hebben.
{{Vs|33}} '''He.'''
Uw wegen. | |||
{{Vs|41}} '''Vav.''' En dat mij Uw goedertierenheden overkomen, o HEERE! Uw heil, naar Uw toezegging;
{{Vs|49}} '''Zayin.'''
{{Vs|69}} De hovaardigen hebben leugens tegen mij gestoffeerd;
Wanneer zult Gij mij vertroosten?
Wanneer zult Gij recht doen over mijn vervolgers?
{{Vs|89}} '''Lamed.''' O HEERE! Uw woord bestaat in der eeuwigheid in de hemelen.
{{Vs|90}} Uw goedertierenheid is van geslacht tot geslacht; Gij hebt de aarde vastgemaakt, en zij blijft staan;
{{Vs|97}} '''Mem.''' Hoe lief heb ik Uw wet! Zij is mijn betrachting den gansen dag.
{{Vs|145}} '''Qof.'''
{{Vs|147}} Ik ben de morgen schemering voorgekomen, en heb geschrei gemaakt;
want Uw geboden heb ik niet vergeten.}}

{{Vs|8}} Deine Rechte will ich halten; verlaß mich nimmermehr!
Lehre mich deine Rechte!
{{Vs|13}} Ich will mit meinen Lippen erzählen alle Rechte deines Mundes.

{{Vs|44}} Ich will dein Gesetz halten allewege, immer und ewiglich.
{{Vs|45}} Und ich wandle fröhlich; denn ich suche deine Befehle.
{{Vs|46}} Ich rede von deinen Zeugnissen vor Königen und schäme mich nicht;
{{Vs|47}} und habe Lust an deinen Geboten, und sind mir lieb;

{{Vs|69}} Die Stolzen erdichten Lügen über mich;
{{Vs|84}} Wie lange soll dein Knecht warten?
{{Vs|89}} Herr, dein Wort bleibt ewiglich, soweit der Himmel ist;
{{Vs|93}} Ich will deine Befehle nimmermehr vergessen; denn du erquickest mich damit.
{{Vs|98}} Du machst mich mit deinem Gebot weiser, denn meine Feinde sind;

ALEPH. | |||
Boldogok, kiknek útjok feddhetetlen, kik az Úr törvényében járnak.
Boldogok, kik az ő bizonyságait vizsgálják, teljes szivökből keresik őt;
Vajha útaim a te igazságaid megőrzésére lennének intézve!
BETH. | |||
Ajakimmal hirdetem a te szád minden itéletét.
GHIMEL. | |||
Epedve ohajtja lelkem a te igazságaidat minden időben.
Megfedded a kevélyeket; átkozottak, kik elhajolnak a te parancsaidtól.
Mert fejedelmek ülnek össze, és szólanak ellenem; de a te szolgád igazságaidban gyakorolja magát;
DALETH. | |||
HE. | |||
VAU. | |||
ZAIN. | |||
Énekűl lettek nekem a te igazságaid zarándokságom helyén.
Megemlékezem éjjel a te nevedről, Uram!
HETH. | |||
Éjfélkor is fölkelek neked hálát adni a te igazságod itéleteiért.
Társa vagyok én minden téged félőnek és parancsaid megőrzőjének.
A te irgalmasságoddal, Uram, teljes a föld; taníts engem igazságaidra.
TETH. | |||
JOD. | |||
KAF. | |||
LAMED. | |||
Uram! a te igéd mennyben örökké megmarad.
MEM. | |||
Mily édesek ínyemnek a te beszédeid! a méz fölött számnak!
Parancsaidból lettem értelmes, azért gyűlölöm a gonoszság minden útját.
NUN. | |||
Szívemet a te igazságaid megcselekvésére hajtom örökké, a jutalomért.
SAMECH. | |||
Törvényszegőnek tartom a föld minden bűnösét, azért szeretem a te bizonyságaidat.
AIN. | |||
PHE. | |||
Csodálandók a te bizonyságaid; azért vizsgálja lelkem azokat.
SADE. | |||
Igaz vagy, Uram! és igaz a te itéleted.
Megparancsoltad igazságos bizonyságaidat, igen a te igazságodat.
COPH. | |||
RES. | |||
A te igéid alapja igazság; örökkévaló a te igazságod minden itélete.
SIN. | |||
Napjában hétszer mondok neked dicséretet a te igazságod itéleteiről.
TAU. | |||
Eltévelyedtem, mint az elveszett juh; keresd föl a te szolgádat, mert parancsaidat nem feledtem el.}}

PART 1. (C. M.) verses 1-3, 165, 6, 21, 118, 119, 155.
''The blessedness of saints, and misery of sinners''
Blest are the undefiled in heart,
Whose ways are right and clean;
Who never from thy law depart,
But fly from every sin. | |||
Blest are the men that keep thy word,
And practice thy commands;
With their whole heart they seek the Lord,
And serve thee with their hands.
Great is their peace who love thy law;
How firm their souls abide!
Nor can a bold temptation draw
Their steady feet aside.
Then shall my heart have inward joy,
And keep my face from shame,
When all thy statutes I obey,
And honor all thy name. | |||
But haughty sinners God will hate,
The proud shall die accursed;
The sons of falsehood and deceit
Are trodden to the dust.
Vile as the dross the wicked are;
{{ | And those that leave thy ways
{{ | Shall see salvation from afar,
But never taste thy grace.}}
{{Middle|4}} | |||
{{Text|Simple| | |||
PART 2. (C. M.) verses 147, 55, 81, 214, 164, 62.
''Secret devotion and spiritual-mindedness''
To thee, before the dawning light
My gracious God, I pray;
I meditate thy name by night,
And keep thy law by day. | |||
My spirit faints to see thy grace,
Thy promise bears me up;
And while salvation long delays,
Thy word supports my hope.
Seven times a day I lift my hands,
And pay my thanks to thee;
Thy righteous providence demands
Repeated praise from me.
When midnight darkness veils the skies,
I call thy works to mind;
My thoughts in warm devotion rise,
{{ | And sweet acceptance find.}}
{{ | {{Middle|4}} | ||
{{Text|Simple| | |||
PART 5. (C. M.) verses 97, 148, 3, 13, 54, 19, 103, 72, 127, 28, 49, 175.
''Delight in Scripture''; or ''The word of God dwelling in us''
O how I love thy holy law!
'Tis daily my delight; | |||
And thence my meditations draw
Divine advice by night.
My waking eyes prevent the day
To meditate thy word; | |||
My soul with longing melts away
To hear thy gospel, Lord.
How doth thy word my heart engage!
How well employ my tongue!
And in my tiresome pilgrimage,
Yields me a heavenly song.
Am I a stranger or at home,
'Tis my perpetual feast;
Not honey dropping from the comb
So much allures the taste.
No treasures so enrich the mind;
Nor shall thy word be sold
For loads of silver well refined,
Nor heaps of choicest gold.
When nature sinks, and spirits droop,
Thy promises of grace | |||
Are pillars to support my hope,
{{ | And there I write thy praise.}}
{{ | {{middle|4}} | ||
{{Text|Simple| | |||
PART 7. (C. M.) verse 96 | |||
''Imperfection of nature, and perfection of scripture''
Let all the heathen writers join
To form one perfect book;
Great God! if once compared with thine,
How mean their writings look!
Not the most perfect rules they gave
Could show one sin forgiven,
Nor lead a step beyond the grave;
But thine conduct to heaven.
I've seen an end to what we call
Perfection here below;
How short the powers of nature fall,
And can no further go! | |||
Yet men would fain be just with God
By works their hands have wrought;
But thy commands, exceeding broad,
Extend to every thought.
In vain we boast perfection here,
While sin defiles our frame,
And sinks our virtues down so far,
They scarce deserve the name.
Our faith, and love, and every grace,
Fall far below thy word;
{{ | But perfect truth and righteousness
{{ | Dwell only with the Lord.}}

PART 11. (C. M.) verses 5, 33, 29, 37, 36, 133, 176, 35.
''Breathing after holiness''
O that the Lord would guide my ways
To keep his statutes still!
O that my God would grant me grace
To know and do his will! | |||
O send thy Spirit down to write
Thy law upon my heart! | |||
Nor let my tongue indulge deceit,
Nor act the liar's part.
From vanity turn off my eyes;
Let no corrupt design, | |||
Nor covetous desires, arise
Within this soul of mine.
Order my footsteps by thy word,
And make my heart sincere;
Let sin have no dominion, Lord,
But keep my conscience clear.
My soul hath gone too far astray,
My feet too often slip; | |||
{{ | Yet since I've not forgot thy way,
{{ | Restore thy wand'ring sheep.}}

{{Text|Simple| | |||
PART 14. (C.M.) verses 153, 81, 82, 71, 50, 92, 75, 67.
''Benefit of afflictions, and support under them.''
Consider all my sorrows, Lord,
And thy deliv'rance send;
My soul for thy salvation faints;
When will my troubles end?
Yet I have found, 'tis good for me
To bear my Father's rod;
Afflictions make me learn thy law,
And live upon my God. | |||
This is the comfort I enjoy
When new distress begins,
I read thy word, I run thy way,
And hate my former sins.
Had not thy word been my delight
When earthly joys were fled,
My soul opprest with sorrow's weight
Had sunk amongst the dead.
I know thy judgments, Lord, are right,
Though they may seem severe;
The sharpest suff'rings I endure
Flow from thy faithful care.
Before I knew thy chast'ning rod
{{ | My feet were apt to stray;
{{ | But now I learn to keep thy word,
Nor wander from thy way.}}

PART 16. (C. M.) verses 25, 37, 107, 156, 40, 159, 93.
''Prayer for quickening grace.''
My soul lies cleaving to the dust:
Lord, give me life divine;
From vain desires and every lust
Turn off these eyes of mine.
I need the influence of thy grace
To speed me in thy way, | |||
Lest I should loiter in my race,
Or turn my feet astray. | |||
When sore afflictions press me down,
I need thy quickening powers;
Thy word that I have rested on
Shall help my heaviest hours.
Are not thy mercies sovereign still?
And thou a faithful God?
Wilt thou not grant me warmer zeal
To run the heavenly road?
Does not my heart thy precepts love,
And long to see thy face?
And yet how slow my spirits move
Without enlivening grace!
Then shall I love thy gospel more,
{{ | And ne'er forget thy word,
{{ | When I have felt its quickening pow'r
{{ | To draw me near the Lord.}}

PART 17 (L. M.) verses 143, 28, 51, 69, 110, 161, 78.
''Courage and perseverance under persecution''
When pain and anguish seize me, Lord,
All my support is from thy word:
My soul dissolves for heaviness;
Uphold me with thy strengthening grace.
The proud have framed their scoffs and lies,
They watch my feet with envious eyes,
And tempt my soul to snares and sin,
Yet thy commands I ne'er decline.
They hate me, Lord, without a cause,
They hate to see me love thy laws;
{{ | But I will trust and fear thy name,
{{ | Till pride and malice die with shame.}}

{{Text|Simple| | |||
PART 18 (L. M.) verses 67, 59, 71-74.
''Sanctified afflictions, or, Delight in the word of God''
Father, I bless thy gentle hand;
How kind was thy chastising rod,
That forced my conscience to a stand,
And brought my wandering soul to God!
Foolish and vain, I went astray
Ere I had felt thy scourges, Lord;
I left my guide, and lost my way;
But now I love and keep thy word.
'Tis good for me to wear the yoke,
For pride is apt to rise and swell;
'Tis good to bear my Father's stroke,
That I might learn his statutes well.
The law that issues from thy mouth
Shall raise my cheerful passions more
Than all the treasures of the south,
Or western hills of golden ore.
Thy hands have made my mortal frame,
Thy Spirit formed my soul within;
Teach me to know thy wondrous name,
And guard me safe from death and sin.
Then all that love and fear the Lord
At my salvation shall rejoice;
For I have hoped in thy word,
And made thy grace my only choice.}}
